Bill Belichick: Cam Newton is Patriots QB … for now

Veteran Cam Newton is the starting quarterback for the New England Patriots. At least for now.

That’s what coach Bill Belichick told reporters Saturday, reiterating the comments he made after the Patriots selected Alabama quarterback Mac Jones in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft in April.

Still, Belichick acknowledged he could change his viewpoint as training camp progresses in Foxborough, Mass.

Reports: Browns reach 3-year extension with RB Nick Chubb

The Cleveland Browns and two-time Pro Bowl running back Nick Chubb reached an agreement on a three-year, $36.6 million extension, ESPN and NFL Network reported Saturday.

Chubb, 25, gets $30 million in guaranteed money, per the reports. The deal keeps Chubb under contract with the Browns through the 2024 season.

Chubb has rushed for 3,557 yards in 44 games (37 starts) to go with 28 touchdowns in Cleveland since the Browns drafted him in the second round of the 2018 draft out of Georgia.

G Henrik Lundqvist retires from NHL

Decorated goaltender Henrik Lundqvist announced his retirement from the NHL.

“It’s time,” Lundqvist posted on his Twitter account Friday morning. “For the last 30 years I have devoted my life to the game of hockey … and now it’s time to walk away from the game I love and begin a new chapter.”

Lundqvist underwent open-heart surgery in January and returned to the ice less than two months later.

Bettors bank on Trey Lance crashing NFL MVP race

Trey Lance is the No. 2 quarterback on the San Francisco 49ers’ roster entering the weekend. BetMGM clearly expects his standing to change and recently trimmed his MVP odds by more than half.

Lance opened at +30000 at BetMGM and started the week at +12500. For reference, that’s the same zip code Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald resides at the moment. Donald is +12500, down from +20000 last month.

BetMGM said one large bet landed on Donald when his odds were +20000. That $500 wager would net a winning ticket of $100,000.

Nuggets re-sign JaMychal Green

The seven-year veteran has appeared in 420 career games (157 starts) for San Antonio, Memphis, the Los Angeles Clippers and Denver, holding career averages of 8.1 points and 6.0 rebounds.
